The Basics of Hair Loss and Hair Restoration

When people think of hair loss, they most often think of the classic receding hairline that affects many men. However, hair loss takes many forms. In both men and women the most common cause for hair loss is genetic and results in “female and male pattern baldness.”  But there are many other reasons for hair loss, and it is important to identify the cause.”

Genetic hair loss occurs when your hair follicles, living structures within your skin that grow hairs, respond to various factors that cause them to form smaller and thinner hairs in a process known as “miniaturization.”  This results in being able to see more of the scalp. Factors that can affect hair loss include:

✔ Genetics (most types of hair loss have an inherited component)
✔ Hormonal changes and vitamin deficiencies

✔ Certain medications

✔ Certain medical conditions

✔ Physical stress, such as pregnancy, recovering from surgery or illness

Non-surgical hair treatments are primarily used to stop the progression of hair loss but can sometimes thicken hair too. . Surgical treatments take follicles from a site not affected by hair loss and move them to the affected areas where they grow as normal hairs.

Surgical Hair Restoration: FUE and FUT

Surgical hair restoration is a delicate procedure requiring a skilled surgeon with an eye for aesthetics. During this procedure, healthy, active follicles are collected and transplanted into the areas where you are losing hair. These follicles are genetically different and do not respond to the factors that promote hair loss.  So when transplanted into other areas of the scalp, they continue to grow normally.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

This procedure removes a strip of skin from an area of healthy hair growth. The strip is then processed to separate the healthy hairs from the skin, and then they are relocated to another part of the scalp. Your surgeon’s skill in creating sites where the new hairs will be placed determines how natural your results will look. The procedure will leave a very small scar on the back of your head which will not be seen as your hair will cover it.  Contrary to what many people think FUT is not a painful process, and the recovery is usually smooth.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

During this procedure, Dr. Lee selects and collects individual follicles from the back of your scalp, using tiny incisions to remove them. These are placed in areas where new hair growth is needed, and Dr. Lee focuses on creating a very natural-looking pattern. This method leaves very tiny dot scars that will not be seen even if the hair is cut very short.

Non-Surgical Hair Restoration: Regenerative Medicine

Not everyone is ready for or needs surgical treatment for hair loss. Non-surgical hair treatments help to prevent further loss and even thicken the hair. Many of these treatments can be used together for better overall results.

Medications

Dr. Lee may suggest the use of specific medication that blocks the enzyme that creates the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  DHT promotes the miniaturization process in the majority of hairs and by decreasing hair growth.  By decreasing DHT levels there is less hair loss.  This can be used in conjunction with other medications that increase the blood flow to the hair follicle, providing more of the nutrients to help it grow.

Low-Level Laser Therapy

This gentle, non-invasive treatment uses light energy to increase the growth of the follicle. This is usually delivered by wearing a cap for less than 10 minutes a day.

Oral Supplements

Many different supplements can promote hair growth by supporting follicle and scalp health. We work with you to develop a plan that meets your nutritional needs while boosting hair growth.

How Much Does Hair Restoration Cost?

You may see the price of hair transplantation (FUT or FUE) listed in several ways. Some providers may attempt to make their options seem like a better value by charging by the graft. However, this method ignores the complexity, skill, and customization that go into each hair restoration procedure.

As a result of the differences between procedures, surgical hair restoration is often estimated to cost between $7,000 and $15,000. At our office, we feel confident with pricing surgery for a result versus a specific number of grafts.  This eliminates issues when more or less grafts are needed than initially anticipated.   When comparing, consider the value of a talented surgeon who has performed thousands of procedures and will use their skill to achieve a natural pattern of hair growth.

Am I a Good Candidate for Hair Restoration?

Almost anyone with thinning hair or hair loss can benefit from our treatment options. Our surgical and non-surgical options have few side effects and are suitable for almost everyone. Good candidates have realistic expectations and want to improve hair growth.

If a medical condition causes your hair loss, resolving this condition may be part of your comprehensive plan for restoring hair growth.  Dr. Lee will spend the time with you in a consultation, talking to you and examining your scalp to determine the best plan of action for your hair concerns.

What Results Can I Expect From Hair Restoration?

The results from hair restoration take time to develop fully.  It can take up to 12 – 15  months for all of the transplanted follicles to grow hairs. Dr. Lee will discuss the timeline of your results during your consultation.

What is Recovery Like After Hair Restoration?

Recovery from a surgical hair restoration procedure Is usually not an uncomfortable process with either the FUT or FUE method.  You will receive detailed post-surgical instructions to follow. Non-surgical methods generally have no downtime, although some injections procedure may cause minor soreness or swelling.
